The royal and anarchistic stand shoulder to shoulder in a brand new version of The Independent Performing Art Festival, which in 2018 has gotten the subtitle SELECTED WORKS. Cooperation and focus on creating constructive alternatives are significant issues to the new management.
“We believe that performing arts play an important function in society – both now and in the future. But that will only continue if it keeps developing and finding new formats, integrates new strategies and keeps questioning itself. There is a need for change and curiosity. That’s why we are making this festival,” the Festival Managers Gritt Uldall-Jessen and Erik Pold say.
This year’s curating team is; performer and choreographer Kitt Johnson, dramatist Jesper Pedersen and performance- and visual artist Naja Lee Jensen. About SELECTED WORKS 2018, they say:
“This year’s programme presents a cross section of contemporary independent performing arts, characterised by the will and courage to insist on a unique artistic expression. Several of the pieces work with the intimate format. They work with closeness and with meeting other people. In the light of the time we spend surfing the Internet, performing arts, which creates a space for physical time together, is very important. It is this importance, we have tried to embrace in this year’s selection for The Independent Performing Art Festival – SELECTED WORKS 2018”.
International piece of upcoming Hungarian performance group
In line with the festival’s increasing international focus, the management has for the first time curated an international opening performance. TROPICAL ESCAPE by the Hungarian performance group Sildenafil Fairy. Many of the artists from the independent performing arts scene in Denmark has an international appeal and function as diplomats of culture, when they are abroad.
Gritt Uldall-Jessen and Erik Pold chose Sildenafil Fairy’s piece, because;
“We believe, it’s important to the independent scene in Denmark to meet and get inspired by and share knowledge with their peers from abroad. TROPICAL ESCAPE has been selected by the festival-directors and is not curated as part of the Open Call. TROPICAL ESCAPE is the first collaboration between performers, dancers and choreographers Csaba Molnár(Slovakia) and Márcio K. Canabarro (Brazil) under the company name Sildenafil Fairy. The artists are based partly in Berlin, Germany and Budapest, Hungary. It was created as an independent project where the two performers took time off from their engagement in various productions for other dance companies. They didn´t have any funding for it and they focused on creating a performance that they really wanted to see themselves. They came up with a cross aesthetic performance, mixing elements of contemporary dance, ballet, performance lecture and live art in a playful and entertaining way.”
